Embroidery: A Contemporary Art Form?  You bet.

Art in Thread

For millennia artisans exercised control over the creative process.  They mix pigments, or dyes, to colour the materials they used to fabricate the designs they conjured.  Over time, the link between execution and idea has attenuated, if not been severed. Today, pickle an ox in formaldehyde, persuade a collector to buy it, and you’re an artist. Admittedly, this is not easy to pull off,. It requires, if not craft., craftiness on the artist’s part,

So what does this fact of life in of 21st Century Art world, portend  for labour- intensive art forms?  Painting flourishes despite digital photography. And embroidery?  Can needlework find a following in today’s technology-driven, idea centric art scene? Or will It go the way of calligraphy and great-grandmother’s parlour doilies? Fortunately, exponents of several handcraft/art disciplines are exploring what thread can express. I am one of them. Are we creating art that merits attention?

You can start  needle painting through books, the Web or attending classes.
